Author Teena Adams addresses a situation that is becoming more common - Grandparents serving as parents or as legal guardians or as adoptive parents committed to raising youngsters without intact families. Adams goes through the possible reasons for this change in parenting function - the unstable economy, parents who fall victim to drugs, the military separation, problematic divorces, etc. - and having laid the foundation for her message she proceeds to offer encouragement and instruction to grandparents who are placed in a position of raising young children for a second `call to duty.'
She presents the concept of adoption and what is involved in that decision and transition, how to deal with the 'change' (read anxiety) that happens with children who are transitioned into a new home environment, being aware and how to deal with the emotional crises children placed with their grandparents as home base. And then she becomes practical, having been emotionally supportive for both grandparents and the adopted children here are lists of resources to aid the grandparents in dealing with young children - from health issues, legal issues, providing food at home and at school, and any number of resources that are available but may not have ever occurred to the reader.
And turning to the grandparents who have taken on this responsibility usually managed by parents much younger in age than they, Adams discusses discipline, spiritual growth, and communication at every level of a child's maturing years. And she ends her helpful book with a fine discussion of Family and the building blocks for establishing a firm foundation positive attitude, singing, cooking, reading, going to church, walking, photographing for establishing references for remembering later in life and of course, appropriate TOYS!
The last pages of the book are websites for grandparents to obtain support and information about their new (or repeated!) duties of providing a nurturing family base for their new start-over family. This is a fantastic little book packed full of information, statistics and resources for grandparents raising their grandchildren. Teena Adams tells how to prepare before the children come and while they are there. She covers all aspects of preparation and care - mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. A quick read definitely worth your time.
I found this book to be a good read. Easy to read in one setting. Grandparents raising their grandchildren is unfortunately all too common. Glad to know grandparents are able to find support for this challenging calling. Good to read a book from someone that is both encouraging and resourceful. Glad I was able to read Grandparents Today. This is an excellent little book for an important niche - Grandparents who are actively involved in their grand children's lives.
